Same-Sex Domestic Violence
Domestic violence in same-sex couples happens just as frequently as it does in heterosexual couples.
Abuse can include physical, emotional or sexual abuse. For people in same-sex relationships, a partner may also use the weapons of homophobia and threaten to out a victim when a partner chooses not to be out. Domestic violence is when one partner coerces, dominates or isolates another partner. Domestic violence is about power and control - it is not about love.
Has your partner ever:
Pushed you, hit you or held you down?
Told you who you could see or where you could go?
Threatened you physically or to tell someone that you're gay?
Forced you to have sex in unwanted ways or against your will?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, your partner may be abusive. You are not alone! Talk with someone who can help.
Help is available to victims of domestic violence. Schuylkill Women In Crisis (SWIC) provides support to victims of domestic violence without regard to their gender or sexual orientation. SWIC is a very LGBT affirmative agency.
SWIC operates a 24-hour emergency hotline - (570) 622.6220 or 1.800.282.0634.
You may also contact PFLAG's Helpline at (570) 624.3151.
Remember to call 911 in the event of an emergency.
